Folic acid is needed by pregnant women because it brings about rapid cell division and growth. It prevents anemia because of rapid production of red blood cell. It is essential to normalize homocysteine levels. There should enough level of folic acid to pregnant because inadequacy of it may lead to brain defects in the child and even neural tube birth defects.   Iron fortified foods are a good source of folic acid too.  It is important for the production of DNA synthesis and also metabolism of protein.  There are many foods rich in folic acid.  Here are the high folic acid foods that we sometimes miss:  spinach being the highest source of folic acid and iron; lettuce; fresh beans; and asparagus which are delicious in making creamy soups. Deficiency also increases the risk of spinal cord defect and Spina Bifida in new born babies. It can also lead to anemia.  It is a must to have a regular intake of folic acid.  There are many foods that are fortified with folic acid.  Go, and grab one!
